Leadership is at the heart of the Mastery of Business and Empathy program. During the program, equip visionary leaders with the tools, strategies, networks and philosophies to successfully lead a purposeful organisation. Central to this is the inner dimension of leadership, starting with emotional health.

With round 2 applications officially open for the flagship program, the Mastery of Business and Empathy, we wanted to we wanted to offer a sneakpeak into one of the tools you will learn about during the MBE called “Above the Line”.

Tamsin Jones sat down this week to explore the power of emotional regulation and its vital role in leadership. Below are some reflections of this conversation along with a video of the wisom Gayle shared.

Tamsin Jones:
The first mountain we climb in the MBE is a foundational leadership discovery where we assess our emotional health as leaders.

Emotional health is an enhanced state of wellbeing, in which we make constructive choices and have respectful relationships. This is essential for leaders in the turbulent and unpredictable times we live in.

“If we truly want to start the process of letting go of systems that are ineffective and design new ones for a more just and inclusive global economy, leaders need to start by being above the line.”
Gayle Hardie, Faculty of the Mastery of Business and Empathy.

One of Gayle's tools is "Above the Line." The simplest way to understand the concept of being above and below the line is to think of yourself on a good day (above) or on a bad day (below). When we are “Above the Line” we unlock new perspectives to find the behavioural freedom to respond, not react. Even when faced with the most complex situation, emotionally healthy leaders do not go down a rabbit hole.

Two tips from Gayle on how we can stay above the line:

  1. Ask how others see you. Explore the moments you're above and below the line. If you trust the person you are asking and there’s a willingness to listen, you will learn something about staying above the line. How did you show up? How can you change the way you act and engage? What is the impact on others?
  2. How do I want to be here? What would it look like if I was above the line? What is a quality I would want more of? Is it patience, kindness, wisdom? Consciously take note of that quality in others – watch someone that exhibits that behaviour and see how it plays out.
